Celebrate Age Without Limits Day in the workplace

Age Without Limits Day is our annual day of collective action to end ageism – in everyday life, in our communities and in our workplaces.

By taking part on Wednesday 11th June, you will be part of making change happen. Whether you’ve got five minutes or an hour, your team can get involved.

This year the theme for the day is Celebrate Ageing. Challenge Ageism. Too often ageism leads us to commiserate, not celebrate, our years. So, this Age Without Limits Day, bring colleagues together to celebrate with pride and share their experiences of getting older.

We have created a number of free materials to promote your activity and get people talking on the day. These include posters, postcards, conversation starters and badges – so you can celebrate your team’s collective age and experience together with pride.

Here are some ideas to get you started.

Activity ideas for the day

  • Celebrate your years: Calculate the combined years of work experience (e.g. we are 761 today!) or length of service of your team. Share these statistics in a fun and engaging way - you can use our stickers so everyone can make their own age badge, celebrating their years of experience, or add a digital badge to your social media channels.
  • Extended coffee or lunch break: Bring people of all ages together to explore what ageism in the workplace may look like, where they think it appears and what can be done about it. Our conversation starters give you tips and ways to talk about this often complex topic. You could ask everyone to share a fun fact about something they’ve done in their life that others may not know. For example, running a marathon, speaking more than one language, living in another country etc. This game can reveal surprising facts about colleagues and challenge ageist stereotypes. Why not make it a celebration of your collective experience with cake too? To help, use our team discussion guide.
  • Celebration pledge wall: Set up a wall in your office where people can use postcards to write a commitment of something they will do to celebrate their age. It’s a great way to spark conversations about ageing and ageism. It could becontinuing a hobby that people love or even taking up something they’ve always wanted to try. You could share photos of the wall for the whole team to celebrate and to keep the conversation going. If your workplace is hybrid or remote, you could set up a virtual noticeboard for people to contribute to instead.
  • Blogs and social media:  You could share the experiences of people aged 50 and over in your workplace in a blog in your newsletter or on your website. Share your activity on social media using #AgeWithoutLimitsDay and use our age-positive image library to share positive and realistic photos of people aged 50 and over.

Keep the action going after the day

  • Experience sharing sessions:  Similar to a lunch and learn, but focusing on how experience has led to growth, both personal and professional. Encourage employees to share skills (or hobbies etc) they have developed over the years, highlighting the value of experience and continuous learning. You could ask your colleagues to take the Age Without Limits Quiz and find out where and how people over 50 experience ageism – and the effects it has on them.
  • Keep the conversation going: Encourage people to feel more comfortable talking about age. Share and use our challenging ageism through conversations guide, which champions positive representations of ageing and later life.
  • Lead by example: Encourage your employer to join the Age-friendly Employer Pledge and join over 400 other employers including many local authorities, Aviva, RSPCA and McDonalds.

Other Age Without Limits Day materials, including bunting and stickers are available with our printed activity pack. To register for a pack please sign up here. Please note we have a limited number available. Packs will be sent in early May, roughly one month ahead of Age Without Limits Day.

Do get creative and find ways to get involved that mean something to you and your team.
